You do not need expensive equipment to record Electronic Voice Phenomena!
Any recording equipment will work with a few other pieces of equipment that are not
needed but are recommended.
None of the equipment I use is expensive and I have had good results using them!
Below are some pictures and examples of the equipment I use and some equipment I
recommend!
Recording Equipment: There are many types of recording equipment. The most common are three, which I will cover.
Analog recorders: These are recorders that use magnetic tape to record. The most common are...
Cassette Recorders: These are the
recorders that use standard sized
cassettes. I use a General Electric(GE)
Box Recorder.
Mini Cassette Recorder: These are
recorders that use miniature cassettes.
I use a General Electric (GE) Mini
Recorder.

Reel to Reel Recorder: These are
pretty much obsolite nowadays, but
remember that they were the recorders
used when EVP was started. I have not
used one of these, but wish I could find
one! Sarah Estep did use a reel to reel
recorder.

Digital recorders are not classified under analog recorders because they do not use magnetic tape. They are the most used nowaday.
Digital Recorder: I use a Panasonic
US-RR360. I love digital recorders
because they are easy to tote and you do
not need an external mic. or any cassette
tapes. I still love the analogs though!
If you are using an analog recorder, there are two pieces of equipment that you will need.
Cassette Tapes: These are necessary. I
recommend using the high bias, also called high
fidelity or CD quality sometimes. These are going
to give you the best quality for recording.
Mini Cassette Tapes: If you are using a mini
cassette recorder, the cassettes do not have a
high or low bias. Instead, the shorter in length the
tapes are, the better quality you will get with them!

External Microphone: Using an external mic will help cut down
internal mechanic noises of a cassette recorder as well as help
amplify your recordings! Use an omni-directional mic because
it will allow sounds to be captured from all sides instead of just
the front of the mic. I use an omni-directional boundary mic!

These next pieces of equipment are things I could not live without! Also in this list would be software, but that
has it's own page that you should check out!
Audio Cable: This is used to transfer your recordings to your
computer. It will work with any recorder that has a headphone
jack! Using a shielded stereo works best. You will know it is
shielded because the jack ends will be brass and stereo
because it will have 2 black bands around each end.
Headphones: These will help you listen back to the recordings
and hear them better. Using headphones that cover the whole
ear is best because it will help you concentrate more on the
recording.
Batteries: You will need these for your recorder, but remember
to always keep extras! Some spirits can drain your batteries in
an instant!
These next piece of equipment is just extra that I recommend, but is not necessary.
Journal: This is good to have to write down your experiences.
You can also record the conditions of when you are recording
like solar x-rays, weather, ect.! You can even journal your
results!
